Timeline
Monday:

  • browse through texts from reading list, find points of interests for your research

Tuesday:

  • discuss interests and decide on a topic for your research ( I will consult with you individually during class)
  • conduct more research about your specific research interest (during class) and post research findings to this blog
  • Start working on visualization using Isadora (you can use my laptop, but it would be helpful if some of you could download the software on your computer as well)

Wednesday:
  • continue work on visualization for your research using Isadora and finish research
Friday:
  • finish visualization in Isadora, compile all research chapters + perform the final outcome at the end of class

    Suggestions for Research Topics:
    • virtual travel with webcams
    • anthropological study/observation of one or two webcams
    • community or lonely souls: does visual communication work?
    • 15 min. or a lifetime of fame: webcam-celebrities
    • study of webcam technology (from low-res to high res)
    • difference between audio communication (telephone), visual communication (skype) and coded communication (text messages)
    • sex, sexuality and webcams (can we link this trend to any other trends in history? how did these fantasies and desires play out before the internet and webcams)
    • the role mobile visual communication in Arab Spring revolutions and other current protests
As a general guide your paper should be 2-3 pages long, double spaced. You can also choose to collaborate with a colleague (one person does the research, the other works on the visualization). The paper can be academic or creative (using narrative form, poetry, or chatroom or text messaging language)
The visual presentation can be a direct translation of the research content, but please avoid the powerpoint style, the more creative the better. You can use pre-recorded video clips, audio, text and of course live video, audio and text renderings.
